We all know about the notification flag (or bar in windows 10) which indicates that updates are available. Ever come to think that it might not be as important? Why do you need the update anyway? On the contrary, the updates are integral and must be installed as soon as possible.

These periodic patches and updates are significant as they usually address the issues being built up on any kind of Microsoft products. Let’s talk about Windows update for now which focuses on the updates provided on the Windows OS.

These are basically of four types:

  • Security Updates
  • Critical Updates
  • Software Updates
  • Service Packs

Security updates are the most common and are also one of the most important for your OS. These deal with the security issues, which include privacy, firewall, antivirus protection, vulnerability and more. They protect your PC from any kind of compromise to Viruses, Trojans and all kind of malware. These must be updated instantly as they are mostly urgent.

Next are the critical updates, which are usually released right after the windows release dealing with any major issue of the operating system itself. They fix all errors which cause unexpected behavior and are supposed to fix any issues inside the OS software. Together with the Security Updates, they form the “High Priority” category of updates from Microsoft and are almost always set to automatically download and install. If yours are not than you should do that immediately from the control panel in your windows.

Then there are the software updates. These are non-critical, meaning they are not urgent. They basically give a further improvement to your OS. This usually includes additional features and minor bugs. These come in small patches and are seldom large in size.

Lastly, the Service Packs – the name is not used now-a-days, as it was changed when windows XP went away. But these are basically the whole Windows Upgrade, comprising of all patches and feature changes, also including the critical updates as a whole. This was called a ‘Service Pack’ when Windows XP was used, and thus, it was divided into SP 1 -3.

All in all, as an answer to the question, “Why should I update?” you should know that the updates prevent problems. If you need more problems in your OS then don’t update. But if you are irritated by the issues arising, then an update is all you require. Keep it up-to-date and you safe from all kinds of vulnerabilities and threats to your OS, may it be security or maintenance.
